Wednesday 19th November 2025

Bruce Keith will be give the first lecture of this years winter programme with a talk based on his book entitled "Scotland beneath the surface". During this talk, Bruce will entertain us with accounts of the rich natural and man-made heritage that lies beneath our feet. He will cover wide range of diverse subjects from naturally occurring caves and fossils to man-made structures including hollow mountains created to generate electricity, railway tunnels, underground bunkers and storage tanks and structures created for the mining of fossil fuels.

This talk will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday the 19th of November 2025 at the Anne Younger Studio of the Eastgate Theatre, Peebles. Free tickets are available from the Eastgate Box Office (Tel. 01721 725777).

 

Wednesday 18th February 2026

Our speaker at the February meeting is Douglas G. Hope.

During his working life, Douglas worked for both central and local government in Scotland. Between 1975 and 1996, he was Depute Director of planning and Development at Borders Regional Council. He also worked for the Scottish Government’s Directorate for Planning and Environmental Appeals.

Douglas will be speaking to members about his new book and his experiences of working for more than 50 years as a town and country planner in the Scottish Borders.
